After 7 years living in Budapest, I learned that the city isn’t just a feast for the eyes, but a feast in the classic way, as well! You may have come to Budapest for the famous ruin bars or the river cruises past UNESCO Heritage Sites, but have you checked out the food and wine scene? If you’re like me (i.e. you’re always down to add a food or wine event to your calendar), then this Budapest food, wine, and gourmet guide will be a useful tool! Egészségedre és jó étvágyat!

Winelovers Grand

Date: Late March
Who wouldn’t want unlimited wine tasting in one of Budapest’s most historic 5 Star hotels? Winelovers puts on events throughout the year, and Winelovers Grand is their largest. This showcase features 100+ exhibitors and 600+ wines from across Hungary, and one entry ticket grants you access to unlimited tasting of them all (as well as additional wines with the VIP ticket). You can attend pop-up lectures to deepen your knowledge, or simply enjoy your wine in the grand halls of the historic Corinthia Hotel Budapest.
April
Etyek Picnic (Spring Edition)
Date: Early April
This open-air celebration of wine is one of the most-awaited spring events among wine (and party) lovers. Etyek is a small wine region 40-ish minutes south of Budapest, and it is packed with wineries—both new-age and mom-and-pop varieties. During the festival, the small town comes alive, as you walk from winery to winery, accompanied by live music and tasty bites. The festival repeats through the summer, as well; follow the Etyek Picnic’s Instagram for up-to-date dates!
May/June
Budapest Gourmet Festival
Dates: Late May – Early June
The Gourmet Feszstivál celebrates all things epicurian. High-end food, drinks, spirits, and workshops all await you in Buda’s Millenáris Park. Go and rub shoulders with other serious foodies in Budapest.
Rosalia Borpiknik

Dates: Late May – Early June
A whole festival dedicated to rosé and sparkling wine? Sign me up! Rosalia Wine Picnic is one of the first wine festivals of the summer, and everyone’s always so happy to be outside. The picturesque Városliget (City Park) is the setting, meaning you can enjoy the tastings, food vendors, and live music all with a castle backdrop.
Belvárosi Bor and Peszgő Fesztivál (Wine and Champagne Festival)
Date: Mid-May
The Wine and Champagne Festival is always a Budapest summer highlight. Held in one of the prettiest parks of the city, the festival fills Freedom Square with some of the best bites and bubbles. Just a stone’s throw from Parliament, you can enjoy a scenic walk along the river after you finish your tastings.
Winelovers River Night
Date: Late June
This is your chance to pair Budapest’s best views with its best wines. I will always suggest a Budapest river cruise as a must-do activity. Sailing past the lit up spires and castles of Budapest’s skyline during sunset is a view you will remember for the rest of your life. And on the Winelovers River Night, you get to take in the views while having an unlimited tasting of 150+ wines.
August
St. Stephen’s Day and the “Cake of Hungary”
Date: August 20th
Budapest comes alive with festivities during the week surrounding Hungary’s National Day, but of course, Hungary’s birthday wouldn’t be complete without a birthday cake! Confectioners from all over the country submit their recipes, and the winning cake is unveiled on the holiday as a part of extensive holiday programming. Várkert Bazár also hosts a street market featuring other classic Hungarian foods. If you can’t find the cake on the weekend, don’t worry–it will be available in confectioneries throughout the country following the holiday.
September
Budapest Coffee Week
Coffee lovers, unite! I think Budapest has one of the greatest concentrations of cafes, and this relatively new event is a perfect way to celebrate coffee around the city. Grab your coffee passport and collect stamps as you try drinks at participating locations across Budapest. At the end, submit your passport to compete for prizes. Budapest Coffee Week is great for coffee aficionados or newcomers who simply want to learn more about the noble bean.
Budapest Wine Festival
Date: Early-mid September
This is Budapest’s most picturesque and highly-awaited wine festival of the year. Held in the grounds of Buda Castle, the Budapest Wine Festival focuses on elegant tastings with panoramic views of the Danube and all of Pest spread out before you. I especially love it at sunset! Note that unlike Winelovers events, tastings are not unlimited here. Study the map to find (and discover) your favorite Hungarian wines!
Winelovers 100 Tasting
Date: Late September
A smaller version of March’s Winelovers Grand, the Winelovers 100 Tasting takes you back to the Corinthia Hotel to sample 100+ of Hungary’s best wines.
October
Vingardium in the City
Date: Early October
Vingardium invites you to spend a crisp autumn evening inside Bálna (“the Whale”), overlooking the Danube and tasting some of Hungary’s finest wines.
Chimney Cake Festival (Kürtőskalács Fesztivál)
Date: Mid-October
The chimney cake–a coiled sweetbread cooked over coals covered in toppings–is one of Hungary’s most famous desserts. The Chimney Cake Festival (taking place in the Budapest Zoo) gives you a chance to sample both classic and modern spins on chimney cakes (my favorite is the fahéjas/cinnamon). Helmed by renowned chimney cake makers Viztéz, you’re in for a treat.
Budapest Restaurant Week (Autumn Edition)

Date: Mid-October
Restaurant Week comes back around in the fall! It’s your second chance to eat at some of Budapest’s best restaurants for a deal, depending on which set menu you choose. Check the DiningCity website for reservation info!
November
Vince Gala

Vince puts on high-profile wine and gastronomy events throughout the year, and the Vince Gala is a jewel in the winter social calendar. I loved this event because of its truly spectacular setting. You can enjoy unlimited wine tasting in the marble halls of the Museum of Fine Arts.
