Hey there! Welcome to my home base for all things remote work and digital nomadding. (Is that a word? Well it is now.)

If you’re interested in what it’s like to work remotely or be a digital nomad, this is your journey as much as mine! I’m figuring things out as I go, asking questions, and finding out what works best. I want to put all of my resources and insights in the same place.

How I Became A Remote Worker

Long story short?

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that I moved to Budapest in 2017 to teach English. I craved variety, so I got a freelancing visa and split my time between teaching Business English and doing marketing for a Budapest tourism company. When a friend advertised that her company was hiring (via Instagram, may I add), I saw an opportunity to add extra income and grow professionally. I spent some very busy (and difficult) months freelancing for all three, before being hired full time as a Digital Marketing Specialist.

Now, I’m working remotely for an American marketing company from my favorite city in the world! And from many other cities, if I have anything to say about it.

Remote Work in Budapest

If you’ve ever asked: where’s the best place to work remotely in Europe? I’ll answer you loud and proud: Budapest! Of course, I’m biased (there is so much to love about Hungary, after all!), but here are three reasons why:

  • Remote work visa
    • Dealing with visa issues can be the biggest of headaches (trust me, I know!). Thankfully, Hungary has joined the growing list of countries to create a special visa just for remote workers. This takes a lot of the stress out of legally getting to this wonderful country.
  • Low cost of living
    • Tourists have long flocked to Budapest for its affordable prices. Thankfully, more and more have been seeing that there’s so much more to Budapest than it’s party scene!. It turns out that the low prices extend to rent, food, etc. as well. Although prices have been steadily rising as Budapest gains popularity, the cost of living in Budapest is still relatively lower than any other Western European capital.
    • Hungary is also on the Forint (HUF), so you’ll find that dollars, euros, or pounds stretch here. Many remote workers in Budapest who earn a foreign salary find it possible to afford daily life while still saving money.
  • Accessible for traveling
    • One of the perks of working remotely in Europe is having so many destinations in reach! Budapest’s Central European location makes it the perfect home base for traveling.
    • Did you know Prague, Vienna, and Zagreb are all less than 6 hours away by train/bus? And Amman, Egypt, and Israel are less than 5 hours by plane?
    • Budget airlines such as Wizzair, Ryanair, and Easyjet regularly fly out of Budapest airport, making the world your oyster!
    • Speaking of traveling…
