Free Workshop Review: Wild Code Budapest

I’m on the lookout for experiences that add value in Budapest. So when I saw the free coding workshop offered by Wild Code School, I was curious. It sounded like a good way to meet people in Budapest and to finally break into the world of coding.

What is Wild Code School?

Located close to Astoria, Wild Code School offers 5 month programs to be a full stack developer (full time program) or a front end developer (part time program). WCS has campuses in over 10 countries and this Budapest campus is a new addition.

The building itself is nondescript (I walked past the entrance before I found it) and a little run down, but once you take the elevator, you step out into a bright and open room. I was met by the sight of tables all around (including a ping pong table) and projector running and ready to show the coding lesson.

What’s the structure of the workshop?

To kick things off, the business manager gave a quick presentation on WCS. Since it was a free workshop I figured there’d be some sort of a sell, but this one was brief and non-intrusive (it’s not like I had to sign up for a time share or anything, haha). And then our instructor started the workshop! The end goal? To build a meme generator.

After a quick registration on Codepen (free tool for practicing coding), we got down to work. The room was mostly silent except for the instructions and the clack of fingers on keyboards as we became acquainted with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Over the next hour we turned this…

Into this!

What I loved about this workshop was that it was very straightforward and gave a tangible outcome. I’d had practically no experience with coding, and was able to follow along with the instruction and have an outcome I’m proud of. (I mean, who doesn’t love looking at lil Baby Yoda?). Afterwards we munched on free pizza and compared our memes.

If you’re looking for a way to become more technically literate in a fresh environment, keep an eye out for Wild Code School events! I had to sign up for their email list, but otherwise there were no strings really attached. You can find more info on their courses as well as their free workshops here.
