After living in Budapest for seven years and helping countless guests plan their trips, I know what can make or break an itinerary. Often, there’s no right or wrong answer–there’s just what’s worth your time and your money. I want your Budapest trip to be as smooth as possible, so I put together this little cheat sheet on some of Budapest’s most popular activities. River cruises, thermal baths, and museums? Check, check, and check!

Budapest River Cruises

With UNESCO World Heritage Sites, historic buildings, and unique bridges lining the riverbanks, Budapest is made to be seen from the water. But which cruise fits your trip?
Evening Sightseeing Cruises:
Gorgeous lit up scenery, atmospheric views, and a great pre-activity before dinner + ruin bars
Daytime Sightseeing Cruises:
Clear views of architecture and landmarks, great for getting familiar with the city before you explore on foot.
Dinner Cruises:
Perhaps not the best food you’ll have in Budapest, but the dinner cruises are rich in ambience as you leisurely sail up and down the river.
My advice: Get the best of both worlds by booking an evening sightseeing cruise at sunset and then grab dinner/drinks in the city.
Budapest Thermal Baths

As the City of Spas, exploring Budapest’s thermal baths is at the top of the list! But not all baths are the same.
If you want:
- Postcard-perfect views and a social, lively atmosphere (prepare for crowds)→ Széchenyi
- History and panoramic views from a rooftop hot tub→ Rudas (ticket and dining here)
- A quieter, less flashy but local experience → Lukács
Learn more about Budapest’s major baths here.
My advice: If you’re wary of crowds, aim for early mornings or consider skipping Széchenyi altogether.
Museums and Tours

From being part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire to emerging from Communism, Budapest has many stories to tell. Classic museums and city tours will give you context for your visit. Alternatively, there are many interactive museums that are perfect for adding color to a rainy day.
Worth it if you’re curious about history:
Better for short visits or bad weather days:
Is the Budapest Card Worth It?
The Budapest Card is a convenient way to unlock free and discounted entry to major attractions, plus unlimited public transportation. It can definitely save you money on your trip to Budapest–depending on how you like to build your itinerary.
Worth it if you:
- Plan to visit multiple museums
- Will use public transport frequently
- Are in Budapest for 1-5 days
Skip it if you:
- Prefer walking everywhere
- Plan to spend more time café/restaurant hopping than visiting attractions
- Plan slower, flexible days
These top Budapest attractions are the perfect building blocks to start building your itinerary. I’m so excited for you to explore the city!
Happy planning!
