Goodbye, Budapest

Over seven years ago, I asked a question: What now?

I knew I’d be moving to Budapest, but I had no idea what or who would be waiting for me. I had no idea how much the city would give me.

Back in 2017, a 23-year-old, bright-eyed, TEFL-certified English teacher moved here. And over the next seven years, she explored Europe, became more confident traveling solo, visited jaw-dropping places, met lifelong friends, lived the remote work lifestyle, found her voice, and built a home. It’s been an honor to come of age here.

But now that my visa has been denied, it’s time to go.

And so, I’m asking the question again: What now?

I’m not sure. It would be easier if I had the Next Big Thing lined up. If I had some irresistible job waiting for me back home, or a digital nomad visa for one of my dream destinations, or the love of my life waiting to sweep me off my feet.

But the truth is, I don’t have any of those things. I’m going to go back to Washington and rest and process. I’m going to write (I still have so much helpful Budapest content in my drafts folder) and reacquaint myself with home. I’ve cried a lot of tears, prayed a lot of prayers, and now, all there is to do is take the next step.

Thank you for following along this far. And if you’ve ever been in a place like this, where life takes an unexpected turn and you have no idea what to do next, I’m right there with you. I have a feeling we’re only just getting started. Here’s to the Next Chapter, whatever (wherever) that may be!

Big hugs (and even bigger dreams),

Xx Denae
