A Free Day with Frida Kahlo

Here’s a tip for you budget travelers: On national holidays many of Budapest’s museums and galleries are open for free!

I’d been eyeing the Frida Kahlo exhibit at the Hungarian National Gallery for awhile, and figured that Oct 23rd was the perfect time to go! So myself and some special people jumped in the ridiculously long line and got ready to see Frida!

On the last national holiday I stood in line for over an hour just to take a 10 minute walk through Parliament (I’d rather just pay for the tour and actually see the place), but this was such a better experience.

I hadn’t known much about her life and struggles, but wow…what a woman. I didn’t take many pictures because I figured they couldn’t really do her works justice. Sometimes the pain was tangible.

And after the exhibit, walking through the Castle District (and tripping over its cobblestones) on the way to some cute cafe is a beautiful way to spend the autumn afternoon. Although, you’ll want to do your research–many shops and cafes are closed since it’s a national holiday.

The Frida Kahlo exhibit closes on Nov. 4, but there are always interesting things coming through the museum! Who knows what you can see for free the next time you find yourself in Budapest on a national holiday?
